Since 2002, the US has spent $17 billion rebuilding Afghanistan. About $1 billion of that went to establishing an educational system from the ground up.

A Buzzfeed News investigation discovered many schools supposedly built by the agency were unused, derelict or were simply never existed. Journalist Azmat Khan spot checked 50 schools across the country and found at least a tenth simply weren’t there, while those that were had massively exaggerated enrollment numbers.


CUNY’s Jad Sleiman visited a tutoring program in Queens that caters to children fleeing Afghanistan to see if the failing schools Khan uncovered had followed the refugees to New York.
